First Grow

March 2022

Started from Seed via J6B. The grow kit was purchased at Roots Hydroponics Chicago on March 8. Seeds/lings started March 3 via paper towel method between two grandma saucers in the furnace room. Planted in an unused shower caddy (J6B’s idea!) due to lack of solo cups. Added warm mist humidifier on lowest setting to tent and cloud line in-line fan system keeping humidity at around 58%. LED 18/6 100 R spec grow lights schedule. Filling humidifier tank about once every other day. Using Detroit Nutrient Company Great Lakes Water Only Soil.- NOT FOR SALE OR TRADE. FOR MEDICAL USE ONLY.

It’s been a few since my last post. Buds are growing but leaves look spotty? May switch to spring water at this point. LEDs are about 17” away, keeping RH below 50% and temps below 78°F or so (it’s been really 🥵 here). Tricombs look clear.

Caliban

Caliban Agree w green thumbs. I would however take out all those dead leaves off the soil. Rotting vegetation can attract bugs.

vespathekid

vespathekid Thanks 🙏 for the good words. Didn’t know if watering over the dead leaves would bring any nutrients back into the soil. Will check out the app!

Day: 105

Starting to stretch out more. Added a second trellis to get ready when they shoot up. Will water again tomorrow and probably trim more leaves underneath. Also, have been PHing the water, hopefully won’t hurt the live soil. 🤞

robhip Awesome first.

Day: 101

Grow! Grow! Grow! Raised the light up another inch or so. On another note, I would really like to use a different strain name than AK-47. Just need some ☮️ in my life right now. Any good suggestions?

Day: 98

They may not be perfect but they are mine. The 🍇 Kush AKA Ethel (left side) is growing tall. I swear it’s grown taller while I stand here writing this. 😂 Noticed more bud sites on it today. The AK-47, AKA Lucy (right side)has stayed bushy and pretty even in height with a little LST. Many droopy brown leaves 🍁 underneath - hopefully pushing all the good juju to the top 🪷.

The girls are growing. The first photos are Ethel. Check out the second photo of one of the Bud sites. Not sure what’s happening there. The next 2 photos are Lucy, sooo many buds!!!

Day: 93

Starting to get droopy. Should I be watering before lights out? Or just wait til morning? Bud sites are forming, yay!

bonrad

bonrad Either way is fine but watering at night has the possibility to cause mold growth with cooler temps, I water when the soil is dry about 2 inches deep to prevent overwatering

bonrad

bonrad ive never had issues watering at night tho I can’t imagine mold would start that easily

stick e fingerz

stick e fingerz I Always water at lights on so the plants don’t go to bed on a full stomach 👍

Defoliated the left plant 🌱 (Ethel vs. Lucy on the right). Also added a dehumidifier just outside the tent, now getting lower 40s RH at night, 🙌 Much better than the low 60s I was getting with only the exhaust fan. So far both girls.

@eaegifts

@eaegifts 60s is good if you’re in veg, just need a oscillation fan going for airflow. 40 is flower stage numbers, really later flower stage 👍🏾👍🏾

vespathekid

vespathekid @eaegifts Appreciate the good tips! I’ve got a fan just above the plants (see the white cord top center) and two little fans on the floor to circulate 🌬). I’ll bump up that RH for now, thanks! 🙏

@eaegifts

@eaegifts No problem, love to see some big bushes

vespathekid

vespathekid Thanks pal

Day: 83

Ugh 😣 Went too many days without 🚿 I imagine they will bounce back after this watering today but gotta start paying closer attention. Was even going to do some defoliation but gonna wait til they perk up again. Live and learn ☮️

Day: 83

Amazing what some 💦 will do! Perked right up hours later. Don’t want to let that happen again. 😥 On another note, I added a few small baby 🖥 fans to the floor. They used to be J6Bs for his space grow but he doesn’t need them anymore. I will defoliant in the next few days to help reduce the humidity. It’s low 50rh right now with the exhaust fan at 9/10. Summer is coming. It’s only gonna get hotter and more humid. 😓

stick e fingerz

stick e fingerz What’s the purpose of the netting

vespathekid

vespathekid It’s a form of Low Stress Training (LST) to keep the plants from growing too tall in my small tent. I weave the stems through it.

Day: 80

I feel like it’s a humidity game at this point. Flipped to 12/12 on the last posting. There’s been lots of rain here so humidity is up. Currently it’s around 52RH so hope it will stay that way overnight during the darkness. I’ve got the exhaust at 9/10 which seems to be helping. Wondering about how to deal with the humidity going forward. A dehumidifier won’t fit in that tent. Maybe some clipping of leaves? 🪴We will see. Plants are looking healthier as far as I can tell.

kinglouis Since you just flipped into flower, I recommend a strong defoliation. You can remove most of the fan leaves and bud sites below the net. If you don’t feel comfortable removing that many leaves, start with any leaves covered by more than 2 or more other leaves

vespathekid

vespathekid Thank you @kinglouis ! A good suggestion. I missed my watering so gonna wait another day and then will remove some leaves. Anything special to do when cutting? Or is a sharp scissors ✂️ enough?

kinglouis Sharp scissors are good, just make sure to disinfect them with some rubbing alcohol before you start cutting

Day: 78

Haven’t posted for a bit. Watered at some point (😬) since last post and due for another today. Will be flipping to 12/12 in the next few days to start flowering. Moved the light closer at least a week ago. 17” right now. Tips of leaves seem good. Just wilty right now.

Day: 70

2 days ago did another epsom spray down to prepare for flowering. Had to water today, very droopy, especially Ethel. She always gets weepy. Also added a net to spread out the growth. Did add some fishsh*t to the water on the last watering too. After talking with the folks at Aroma Grow, will start flowering next week. Fun times!

Ol' Lawson

Ol' Lawson You are weaving and waiting to flip to late. I filled the trellisnet in 2 days!

vespathekid

vespathekid Goood to know, thanks for the tip

Day: 67

Bushy, bushy! Watered 2 days ago and found Ethel (on left) very droopy. Whoops 😬 But we all have our droopy days. Need to move my lights up another 2 inches. New leaves look nice with slight yellowing on the tips but not as bad as weeks ago. Maybe the epsom salt spray is helping? Will do another in a week or so. Very exciting!

vespathekid Thanks friends! Appreciate the good vibes 🫶

Day: 60

🎉 Day 60 on Bud with my first grow! Amazing what a watering 💦 will do (yesterday 48oz each). Nice and bushy! Any overflow water in the pans was wicked right up so no issues there. I can really feel the weight of the pots now vs. dry yesterday. Had to raise the light up another 5” or so.

Day: 58

Finally landed on the appropriate names: Lucy (on rt.) & Ethel! My wife wanted Fred & Ethel but I explained no males! 😂 Watered yesterday and after talking with Tommy at DNC soil (great guy and very helpful!) , just did an Epsom salts spray down just before lights out which I will continue every 2-3 weeks until flowering stage. It was mentioned here before so thanks for the good tips. Due to this, going back to 18/6💡.

A little perkier after 💦 yesterday but I think more discoloration is on more leaves.

BINAII

BINAII Looks like you’re using pretty decent soil. You’re Ph levels are out of range. Plant isn’t able to uptake certain nutrients. Looking at how much greener the older leaves are compared to the ones above them, I’d say that your Ph is too high and the plant isn’t pulling up any nitrogen. Water til runoff and measure it. Probably up over 7.0

vespathekid

vespathekid What do you recommend to help fix this? I really don’t know 🤷🏻‍♂️

BINAII

BINAII Grab a hand full of soil out the pot and put it in a cup, pour some Ph water on it. Ph the water to what you normally use. Stir it a bit and let the mud settle in the bottom. Then I want you to test the ph level in there.

Day: 50

Watered today. 💦 Have switched over to 24 lights and haven’t needed the humidifier as the RH has stayed steady around 57% with the help of the cloudline exhaust set at max 4 speed. Noticing more edge discoloration on the Grape (1st pic) and like the AK, they are both continuing to grow. At least there’s that. I’ve removed the little LST I had from the AK and rotated the pots a bit. Will add some FishSh*t to the 💦 the next time.

Day: 48

I’m getting resigned to the fact that I’m going to have leaf issues no matter what and to be grateful that I’m growing at all and that it’s my first time. *sigh. First times are always special but not necessarily perfect. 🍀 — After 3 days soil still feels a bit damp, gonna wait another day to 💦 Excited for the new growth and it’s starburst 💫 like pattern. — Also, switching to 24 from 18/6.

kaijuGrows

kaijuGrows What’s the pH? Fish fertilizer foliar spray corrects a lot of stuff. Just drop some Alaska into your water. Mix. Balance pH to about 6.2 is what I like to do. May help. Good luck! Also always just opinions

Caliban

Caliban Epsom salts too. Add a tsp/ gallon of water. Will clear up that Mg deficiency quick! Don’t sweat it! The community will help guide.

vespathekid

vespathekid Appreciate the good words! It’s been recommended by the folks at the living soil co. I’m using to not add anything to the water, that the extra salts will throw off the built in nutrients in the soil. I did get some Fish Sh*t samples that should be ok. Will add on the watering after the next one.

Day: 45

Trying some 💦 directions from Detroit soil folks - qt and half per 5 gal pot every 3 days. Also added carbon filter today and up exhst. fan to 5 speed from 3 to keep RH at 58%. Is it better to keep fan always running at 1 speed or let the exhst fan regulate constantly spinning up and all the way down? Does it matter?

Day: 43

Whomp whomp 🥲 guess my LST was a bit too much. Found an odd leaf on the Grape and then discovered the plant had topped itself! Not sure if tapping it back in place is worth much. Will stick the top in the soil but 🤷🏻. Talked with Tommy at Detroit Nutrient Co, he thinks maybe I’m overwatering. Gonna let things dry out a bit and try some measured watering per his suggestion. My grow store contact is leaning more towards nutrient deficiency. More to learn and discover.

Day: 38

Watered last night. The AK (on top) still looks a bit stunted with old leaves curling up and down. Gave it more water at once to see if that helps. Have trimmed a few bad leaves. Not sure if to trim more. The Grape (bottom) is really thriving! Yay! Have not topped either yet. All is good with the humidifier with the CL fan set to a high speed of 2 and 57% on the RH on the top end.

Day: 34

Just watered and attempting some LST and trying not to stress about the plants 🌱 looking a bit dreary. Got my humidifier on a timer and keeping the cloudline at a 3 fan always on for now until there’s more natural humidity. I’m open to kind advice.

HammertimeAZ

HammertimeAZ Looks like you’re off to a great start

Dr. Boring

Dr. Boring Actually no, sorry, looks like a bad start. You got all sorts of discoloration and leaf damage, for a plant that young to look like that you did at least 4 things wrong lol

vespathekid

vespathekid Yeah tell me about it. Not sure what happened. Everything seemed to turn when I left for a few days. I’ll bet the RH was low for a few days (avg 45%)when my humidifier went out. I also stopped ph correcting the water per the living soil folks. So far the new leaves are looking better and no new red stems. I’m hoping the stress of the few days threw things off and they will correct themselves over time.

View 1 additional comment

Day: 32

A new day, a better attempt. So far I’m convinced I was running into a few issues: too small a container (see prev pics) and I’m guessing overwatering. I also tried turning off the humidifier and found the humidity at a good number (57 RH) and the temp about 70°F but the Cloudline (CL) exhaust would never kick on bringing in fresh air from the bottom tent opening. Then the next day turned the humidifier back on and tried the CL on Auto and the tent was continuously “breathing” as it ramped up and down trying to correct the RH. Today I set the CL fan to On at “3”. So far the RH and temp are staying consistent. See pic. Will water again in a few days. Lastly realized I never added anything to the bottom of the pot to help aerate under the soil. Oh well. Next grow.

Day: 30

Welp, a little wilty. Gave more water and didn’t need the humidifier after all plus the monkey fan fell and was blowing on the right plant all day. Here’s to a steady recovery. Humidity avg of 57% and about an avg 70° temp.

Day: 29

Transplanted to smart pots. The roots were a bit tangled taking them out but was gentle as I could be. Humidifier is back up and running strong and humidity is hanging closer to 60%. Looks like I damaged a few leaves from the previous “pot”🍃 but hopefully it’s not an issue.

Day: 27

Had to step away for a few days. Someone came and watered, but my humidifier conked out while I was away. Now I have some leaf issues. Not sure what’s going on as I’m not seeing this issue listed on the sites that deal with grow issues. I had thought to move these two to bigger pots, maybe that will help? Also seeing purple stems. A bad sign? The humidity has been low so will try to increase it tonight with a new humidifier. Wish me luck.

alander

alander Definitely get them in separate pots asap. Their roots might be tangled already but hopefully not too late. Are u checking PH?

alander

alander Also 55% RH is just a tad low for seedlings try and get it 65% if possible🙌

vespathekid

vespathekid Thanks for the tips! Was looking to move them at this stage, so appreciate that. I was changing PH for the water but the soil co. said not to, that it would damage the soil. 🤷🏻‍♂️ trying to understand this better. Will post a screenshot of their email to me later.

View 1 additional comment

Day: 24

Getting a little bushy! Had to use a zip-tie to separate the two. They were starting to crowd each other. AK still shows some lighter green in the leaves. The Detroit soil folks said not to PH the water so I’m not. Will post more from them later. Staying around 70°F or so at 55% humidity (when I remember to fill the humidifier tank 😅).

vespathekid Thanks y’all. Astounding what a few days difference made though (see my next post) but keep the good vibes coming. Hopefully it will help!

Day: 22

Was away for a few days. New leaves 🍃!!! A bit weak in the stalk probably due to not enough water while I was away but still looking healthy I believe.

Day: 18

AK is still slightly lighter in color. Wondering if this “hot” soil is a little too hot. Will keep watering as normal and hopefully will grow out of issue. AK leaves look droopier than they are in person.

Caliban

Caliban Maybe ph is off.

BoofMaster

BoofMaster It looks a little dry in there for seedlings but it’s hard to tell from pictures alone

vespathekid

vespathekid I’ve been making sure not to over water and just added some water behind the plants after this was taken. Keeping it at a moist feel an inch down. Haven’t ph tested the soil yet, just the water. Any other suggestions? Thx for the suggestions.
