Puerto Rico

Winter 2023

I prepared a bag for the first time using a 2lb bag of rice that I boiled for over an hour, about 12g to a pound of dried coco with a lot left behind. I also used the water used in the rice boil to soak the coco. I let the coco sit as the rice dried on a towel. Filled two bags with about 2lbs 4oz of each material , blending the middle where they meet and leaving a layer of coco at the top. Each bag was about 4 lbs 8oz before and after baking them at 170-250 F for about two hours. Sealed the bag ends immediately and let them sit over night. The agar was also home made, I think about 250ml brown rice to 500ml water, 9g corn syrup, and I think 10g agar? If the mycelium puts on a show it’ll change color, didn’t realize I did something cool!

Avengers

Avengers How did it get contaminated?

ZaddyXL

ZaddyXL No clue, it happens from time to time. Could’ve been in the coco, could’ve been from mixing, could’ve been air born, maybe a pop corn kernel wasn’t colonized and molded. It’s very common for this to happen

Had some blue/green on the surface? Sprayed with hydrogen peroxide water and it went away kinda, but may have to toss the bag for contamination

Struggling but fruiting. She didn’t fully colonize for some reason.

Finally got around to spawning her in coco! 1:1 or a little more and a casting layer. Misted with hydrogen peroxide water mist and placed in heat mat.

She’s performing well! I think the lower temps are working. Shook her up and going to let her incubate again. What substrate does she need?

ZaddyXL You have experience? Any tips?

Day: 1

Starting over with the faithful corn method. Added 3 cc to this and shook it up. I fear it may be on the drier side, but I think the previous one had too much residual sugars and moisture leading to contamination and mold. Turned the heat mat down to 71 and they’re sitting at about 72. The agar from before is alive but very contaminated.

Used some agar from spores to try and spawn this bag. About two lbs corn and a lb and a half of coco. The transfer was a shit show and tape sucks but fingers crossed.
